Welcome to Los Barrios
Los Barrios de Amarillo is
a civic organization in Amarillo, Texas established in 1971 by a small
group of volunteer Hispanic community leaders. Its
original mission was to address cultural, educational,
and socioeconomic inequities in the Mexican American
community and advocate for social justice. Over
the years, the membership, composed of professional
business men and women interested in working with
Hispanic youth have focused their energies on
encouraging youth to further their education beyond high
school in order to secure their financial success and
opportunities. College visitation days and career
day projects lead to the current annual "Step Up To
Success" Youth Leadership Conference
Los Barrios sponsors two
conferences per year, one in the fall for Junior and
Senior High School students and one in the spring for
middle school seventh and eighth graders. The one
day conferences are made possible by the financial
support of various local business sponsors and by the
generous community volunteers who serve as speakers.
Through the collaboration of the contributors, as well
as Amarillo Independent School District, Region 16,
Amarillo College and other area learning institutions.
Los Barrios de Amarillo is able to continue to provide
educational information to Amarillo and area students.
Senior students who attend "Step Up" are eligible for
college scholarships.
Los Barrios maintains an open
membership. Everyone is welcomed. Weekly noon
meetings are held on Wednesdays at the Wesley
Community Center at 1615 South Roberts in Amarillo,
806-372-7960. A $5 lunch is provided and weekly
speakers are scheduled, bringing information about
community businesses, agencies and events.
